{"id":1848,"date":"2011-05-23T15:03:59","date_gmt":"2011-05-23T20:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=1848"},"modified":"2011-05-23T15:03:59","modified_gmt":"2011-05-23T20:03:59","slug":"legislative-update-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=1848","title":{"rendered":"Legislative Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Legislature acted on two bills <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=1816\">mentioned<\/a> last week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2011\/related\/amendments\/ab7\/asa2_ab7\">AB 7<\/a> (Voter ID)<\/strong> The Senate, after two days of rancorous debate, passed the proposal 19-5 on Thursday, May 19. Senator Fred Risser (D-Madison) was speaking against the bill when Senate Mike Ellis (R-Neenah) called for a vote. Several Democrats either missed the vote in the confusion or abstained from voting in protest. The governor is expected to sign the bill into law Wednesday.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/frame\/2011\/related\/proposals\/sb28\"><strong>SB 28 <\/strong><\/a><strong>(Geographic representation of the Board of Regents)<\/strong> The bill passed the Senate 25-7 on Tuesday, May 17. It has been referred to the Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities for further action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/gab.wi.gov\/\">Government Accountability Board<\/a> (GAB) <a href=\"http:\/\/gab.wi.gov\/node\/1873\">announced today<\/a> that challenges to three recall efforts failed, clearing the way for recall elections in July. Unless delayed by a court challenge, Republican Senators Randy Hopper of Fond du Lac, Dan Kapanke of La Crosse, and Luther Olsen of Ripon will each face a Democratic challenger on July 12.
