They met with representatives from Wisconsin&#8217;s entire congressional delegation and had meetings with Senator Herb Kohl and Representative Tammy Baldwin.<\/p>\n<p>Tracy and O&#8217;Meara <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/PROFS-Federal-Handout.pdf\">discussed<\/a> the importance of federal funding for research and education at UW-Madison &#8212; $879 million this year. They also expressed concern over <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=2666\">plans<\/a> that might unreasonably reward universities for not increasing tuition.<\/p>\n<p>Other facts they shared:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UW Madison is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arwu.org\/ARWU2010.jsp\">one of the top 20<\/a> universities in the world, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities.<\/li>\n<li>UW-Madison <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/statistics\/infbrief\/nsf10329\/\">ranks among the top three<\/a> American universities in securing science and engineering research money.<\/li>\n<li>UW-Madison&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.wisc.edu\/news\/docs\/UW-Madison_Economic_Impact_Study.pdf\">economic impact<\/a> is $12.4 billion annually, according to a report by NorthStar Economics, Inc.<\/li>\n<li>UW-Madison faculty secure, on average, $500,000 in outside research funding annually.<\/li>\n<li>Top sources of federal research funds include National Institutes of Health; National Science Foundation; NASA; and the Departments of Energy, Commerce, Defense, Education, and Agriculture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Bill Tracy, president of PROFS, and Jack O&#8217;Meara, legislative representative for PROFS, recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to lobby on behalf of UW-Madison faculty.
