{"id":3404,"date":"2012-05-24T16:21:26","date_gmt":"2012-05-24T21:21:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=3404"},"modified":"2012-05-25T13:01:08","modified_gmt":"2012-05-25T18:01:08","slug":"romneys-speech-on-higher-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=3404","title":{"rendered":"Romney&#8217;s Speech on Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Massachussetts Governor Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2012\/05\/24\/romney-unveils-higher-education-platform\">outlined<\/a> his position on federal student aid in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/answer-sheet\/post\/romneys-education-speech--text\/2012\/05\/23\/gJQAUAtpkU_blog.html\">speech<\/a> to the Latino Coalition in Washington, D.C. yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>While most of Romney&#8217;s remarks focused on K-12 education and his support of a voucher-type program for special needs and low income students, he did propose changes to the federal financial aid program and vowed to keep tuition affordable.\u00a0In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/94576248\/A-Chance-for-Every-Child\">white paper<\/a> that was released as part of the speech, Romney tied rising tuition to increases in student aid:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>. . . a flood of federal dollars is driving up tuition and burdening too many young Americans with substantial debt and too few opportunities.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/Romney-Pledges-to-Simplify\/131958\/\"><em>The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em><\/a> Terry Hartle of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acenet.edu\/AM\/Template.cfm?Section=Home\">American Council on Education<\/a> said he was disappointed that Romney did not mention declining state aid as a primary reason for tuition increases saying that &#8220;(t)<span>here&#8217;s no evidence of any relationship\u2014let alone       causation\u2014between federal student-aid spending and changes in       college tuition. None, zero, zip, nada.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The former governor also plans to simplify student aid programs and return to bank-based lending, which was phased out two years ago. Romney supports &#8220;private-sector involvement to ensure students are clearly informed about their obligations when they apply for federal student loans, and that they receive support that goes beyond a call from a collections agent to help keep them on track to repayment.&#8221;\u00a0The Department of Education now loans money directly to students with savings steered toward Pell Grants and deficit reduction.<\/p>\n<p>Until this speech, Romney had offered few details regarding his position on higher education.
