{"id":4435,"date":"2012-12-30T12:28:37","date_gmt":"2012-12-30T18:28:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=4435"},"modified":"2012-12-30T12:28:37","modified_gmt":"2012-12-30T18:28:37","slug":"politifact-on-uw-system-faculty-salaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=4435","title":{"rendered":"PolitiFact on UW System Faculty Salaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/static.politifact.com.s3.amazonaws.com\/editions\/wisconsin\/pf-wisconsin-flag.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"69\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/\"><em>Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/em> <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/wisconsin\/\">PolitiFact Wisconsin<\/a> recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/wisconsin\/statements\/2012\/dec\/26\/kevin-reilly\/uw-system-president-says-salaries-are-18-percent-b\/\">examined<\/a> a statement by University of Wisconsin System President Kevin Reilly asserting that &#8220;faculty salaries at UW System institutions have now fallen more than 18 percent below the national average.&#8221; Reilly made the <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=4355\">remarks<\/a> to the Board of Regents on December 7.<\/p>\n<p>PolitiFact found that Reilly&#8217;s remarks were true and cited <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaup.org\/reports-publications\/2011-12salarysurvey\">figures<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/aaup.org\/\">American Association of University Professors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/faculty-salaries-table-2012\/131433\">analysis<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/section\/Home\/5\"><em>The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em><\/a> as evidence:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Chronicle of Higher Education site shows  that all but one of the UW System\u2019s 13 four-year campuses pay professor  salaries that are &#8220;far below&#8221; the national median for full professors  at public, private and independent institutions of similar type. Madison  is the lone exception; average pay for full professors there ($114,690)  is merely &#8220;below&#8221; the median for doctoral institutions. Figures are for  full-time professors.<\/p>\n<p>Pay at 11 of the 13 schools for another group of faculty &#8212; assistant  professors, which is considered the entry level &#8212; was &#8220;below&#8221; or &#8220;far  below&#8221; the national median. At the other two, it was <em>above<\/em> the national median &#8212; Madison ($75,860) and Whitewater ($62,178).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>PolitiFact noted that salaries for full professors at UW-Madison are on average 4 to 5 percent below the median for doctoral institutions. For many years, UW-Madison has used a rank-by-rank salary comparison with a peer group of similar public doctoral institutions. The <a href=\"http:\/\/apir.wisc.edu\/compensation\/FacultySalaryComparison201112.pdf\">most recent comparisons<\/a> show that faculty salaries at UW-Madison are 12.6 percent lower than the median.
