{"id":4920,"date":"2013-03-20T16:49:01","date_gmt":"2013-03-20T22:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=4920"},"modified":"2013-03-20T16:49:01","modified_gmt":"2013-03-20T22:49:01","slug":"schneider-walkers-uw-plan-deserves-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=4920","title":{"rendered":"Schneider: Walker&#8217;s UW Plan Deserves Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Christian Schneider, a conservative blogger and former senior fellow at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wpri.org\/\">Wisconsin Policy Research Institute<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/news\/opinion\/walkers-uw-plan-deserves-support-bf97kvi-199050041.html\">writes<\/a> in today&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/\"><em>Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/em><\/a> that Governor Scott Walker&#8217;s biennial budget proposal to increase funding for UW System deserves full legislative support, in large part to keep the cost of tuition down and to maintain the university&#8217;s role as an economic engine for the state.<\/p>\n<p>While Schneider is factually wrong on faculty salaries (he cites only salaries for full professors) and he uses a heavy hand to describe students and faculty, he does rightly point out that funding for UW System often lags because its constituency &#8212; students and faculty &#8212; does not vigorously lobby on its behalf, and tuition increases are a convenient tool to compensate for decreased state funding.
