Livestream coverage of the two-day meeting is available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwex.edu\/ics\/stream\/regents\/meetings\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The regents will discuss the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2013\/proposals\/ab40\">2013-15 biennial budget<\/a> and approve <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/UWS-Operating-Budget-2013-14.pdf\">UW System&#8217;s 2013-14 operational budget<\/a> Thursday morning. As a result of the biennial budget, UW System faces a $65.7 million base cut over the next two years. UW-Madison&#8217;s share of the base cut is approximately $20 million. The budget also requires UW System to fund $75.6 million in one-time expenses, including $3.75 million for the Carbone Cancer Center and $1.5 million for the Wisconsin Academy of Rural Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Regent committees will meet Thursday afternoon. The Business, Finance, and Audit Committee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsa.edu\/bor\/agenda\/2013\/july-bfa.pdf\">will discuss<\/a> the Flex Option degree program, review and vote on a proposed methodology for dealing with program fund balances, and review and vote on a pay plan policy document.<\/p>\n<p>UW System was required by the legislature to <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/plan-for-fund-balances-bor-july-2013.pdf\">develop a fund balance plan<\/a> after $1 billion in financial reserves was discovered in April. The\u00a0legislature\u00a0also revoked the authority for UW System and UW-Madison to develop their own personnel systems, forcing the Regents to <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/pay-plan-guidelines-bor-june-2013.pdf\">develop a pay plan policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The committee will recommend a <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/flex-option-pricing-bor-july-2013.pdf\">Flex Option plan<\/a> that allows an &#8220;all-you-can-learn&#8221; model that includes multiple assessments and student services including advising and tutoring for $2,250 for a three-month term. An assessment-only pricing structure is under discussion.<\/p>\n<p>General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/news\/2013\/r130708.htm\">will address<\/a> the board on Friday morning. Immelt is scheduled to deliver a talk, &#8220;Leading the Productivity Revolution.&#8221; GE <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.gehealthcare.com\/articles\/university-wisconsin-ge-healthcare-next-frontier-diagnostic-imaging\/\">announced<\/a> a $32.9 million investment in a state-of-the-art imaging research facility on the UW-Madison campus last fall. The School of Medicine and Public Health and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation are partners in the 10-year effort.<\/p>\n<p>ETA: The Regents <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/news\/education\/uw-regents-freeze-tuition-drawn-down-reserves-b9952114z1-215100541.html\">voted<\/a> Thursday morning to freeze tuition for all students, including graduate, professional, and non-residents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents will meet in Madison on Thursday and Friday, July 11 and 12.
