{"id":6240,"date":"2014-01-30T11:26:32","date_gmt":"2014-01-30T17:26:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=6240"},"modified":"2014-01-30T11:26:55","modified_gmt":"2014-01-30T17:26:55","slug":"rubenstein-to-world-economic-forum-humanities-important-for-future-job-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=6240","title":{"rendered":"Rubenstein to World Economic Forum: Humanities Important for Future Job Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>David Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle private equity firm, <a href=\"http:\/\/dealbook.nytimes.com\/2014\/01\/23\/carlyle-co-founders-formula-for-success-study-the-humanities\/?_php=true&amp;_type=blogs&amp;_r=0\">recently told<\/a> world economic leaders gathering in Davos, Switzerland that students today need the critical thinking skills that are developed by the study of arts and humanities.<\/p>\n<p>Rubenstein believes the emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), has come at the expense of the study of literature and philosophy and that a well-rounded education based in the humanities will lead to greater success in one&#8217;s career.\u00a0He noted that many top executives received degrees in the humanities and that technical job skills can be learned later on the job.<\/p>\n<p>Rubenstein had these words for students choosing their course of study:\u00a0\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t enter college worried about what you will do when you exit,&#8221; noting that &#8220;H=MC &#8212; Humanities equals more cash.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle private equity firm, recently told world economic leaders gathering in Davos, Switzerland that students today need the critical thinking skills that are developed by the study of arts and humanities.
