{"id":6244,"date":"2014-01-31T08:33:43","date_gmt":"2014-01-31T14:33:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=6244"},"modified":"2014-01-31T08:33:43","modified_gmt":"2014-01-31T14:33:43","slug":"states-higher-education-leaders-express-concern-over-college-ratings-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=6244","title":{"rendered":"State&#8217;s Higher Education Leaders Express Concern Over College Ratings System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Leaders of the <\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsa.edu\/\">University of Wisconsin System<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">, the <\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.waicu.org\/home\/\">Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">and the <\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wtcsystem.edu\/\">Wisconsin Technical College System<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\"> released an <\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\" href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/PIRS-Cover-and-Letter-Final.pdf\">open letter<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\"> to President Barack Obama and members of the United States Congress expressing support of the president&#8217;s overall vision to improve access and affordability in higher education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the chancellors and presidents expressed deep concern over changes to the <a href=\"http:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/ipeds\/\">Postsecondary Institution Ratings System<\/a> (PIRS). They are worried that the system could limit student choices and financial aid, ultimately harming affordability and access for the state&#8217;s students.<\/p>\n<p>Their <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/PIRS-Cover-and-Letter-Final.pdf\">letter<\/a> listed three items of concern:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em;\">The proposal to tie federal financial aid to college rankings which could unfairly harm institutions that serve disadvantaged students who might take longer to complete a degree.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em;\">Data about admission, cost, students and faculty are public and widely available. The creation of \u00a0a new system could be redundant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em;\">Ratings systems can lead to standardization, resulting in less innovation.
