{"id":6385,"date":"2014-03-27T12:10:07","date_gmt":"2014-03-27T18:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=6385"},"modified":"2014-03-27T12:10:07","modified_gmt":"2014-03-27T18:10:07","slug":"senate-committee-on-universities-and-technical-colleges-to-vote-on-classified-research-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=6385","title":{"rendered":"Senate Committee on Universities and Technical Colleges to Vote on Classified Research Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Leg_Landscape4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-173 alignleft\" alt=\"Inside Capitol\" src=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Leg_Landscape4.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Leg_Landscape4.jpg 300w, https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Leg_Landscape4-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a>The Senate Committee on Universities and Technical Colleges <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.legis.wi.gov\/raw\/cid\/1028439\">will hold<\/a> an executive session today to vote on <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2013\/proposals\/sb578\">Senate Bill 578<\/a>, a proposal that would allow classified research on University of Wisconsin System campuses.\u00a0A System <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwsa.edu\/fadmin\/gapp\/gapp2.htm\">administrative policy<\/a> currently prohibits such research.<\/p>\n<p>The bill will go to the Senate on April 1 if approved today.\u00a0An amended version of companion bill (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2013\/proposals\/ab729\">AB 729<\/a>) passed the Assembly February 20. The original bill included language that would allow exemptions to the state\u2019s open records law, but that language was removed after Assembly Colleges and Universities Committee Chair Representative Stephen Nass (R-Whitewater) said he would not schedule a vote on proposal if it included the exemption.<\/p>\n<p>PROFS worked with the authors of the legislation and <a href=\"https:\/\/lobbying.wi.gov\/What\/BillInformation\/2013REG\/Information\/11141\">is registered<\/a> in favor of the bill. This\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/PROFS-Classified-Research-Statement.pdf\">statement<\/a>\u00a0was given to the senate committee at a public hearing on March 5.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">The committee will also vote on several appointments to the UW System Board of Regents and Wisconsin Technical System Board.
