{"id":6438,"date":"2014-04-12T17:09:50","date_gmt":"2014-04-12T23:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=6438"},"modified":"2014-05-01T10:13:37","modified_gmt":"2014-05-01T16:13:37","slug":"governor-walker-proposes-additional-2-year-tuition-freeze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=6438","title":{"rendered":"Governor Walker Proposes Additional 2-Year Tuition Freeze"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Governor Scott Walker <a href=\"http:\/\/walker.wi.gov\/newsroom\/press-release\/governor-scott-walker-calls-additional-two-year-tuition-freeze-university\">announced<\/a> Friday morning that he would propose an additional two-year freeze on University of Wisconsin System tuition. The governor said his proposal was a direct result of the recent disclosure that UW System will finish the fiscal year with about $1 billion in reserve. Last year, the governor <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=5180\">called<\/a> for a two-year tuition freeze after the university was found to have just over $1 billion in reserve.<\/p>\n<p>The governor&#8217;s plan came as a surprise as the UW System Board of Regents <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/bor\/meetings\/archive\/2014.htm\">met<\/a> for a second day in a regularly scheduled meeting. UW System President Ray Cross <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/news\/2014\/r140411.htm\">responded<\/a> quickly, saying that he will continue his work with the governor and legislature while thoughtfully and judiciously managing and explaining UW System resources. Cross told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/news\/statepolitics\/walker-proposes-another-two-year-uw-system-tuition-freeze-b99245814z1-254902211.html\"><em>Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/em><\/a> he had discussed the possibility of a one-year extension of the tuition freeze with the governor&#8217;s staff about a month ago, but the conversation had been casual.<\/p>\n<p>The Regent Audit Committee and Budget and Finance Committee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/bor\/agenda\/2014\/april-bf&amp;a.pdf\">met<\/a> Thursday morning and revealed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/news\/2014\/04\/Thurs_FinancialReporting-AnnualBudgetMiller-Wildeck.pdf\">cash balance projections<\/a> for FY 2013-14. UW System will finish the year with almost $1.1 billion in reserve, about half coming from tuition.<\/p>\n<p>UW System officials say that about 80 percent of the funds are committed on some level (see below).
