{"id":6474,"date":"2014-04-29T16:09:11","date_gmt":"2014-04-29T22:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=6474"},"modified":"2014-04-29T16:09:30","modified_gmt":"2014-04-29T22:09:30","slug":"federal-judge-strikes-down-voter-id-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=6474","title":{"rendered":"Federal Judge Strikes Down Voter ID Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>United States District Judge Lynn Adelman struck down Wisconsin&#8217;s voter ID law (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2011\/related\/acts\/23.pdf\">2011 Wisconsin Act 23<\/a>) today, saying the law places an undue burden on minorities and the poor and violates the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/about\/vot\/intro\/intro_b.php\">Voting Rights Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Adelman&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/media.jrn.com\/documents\/adelmanorder.pdf\">ruling<\/a>\u00a0bars enforcement of the law, which was also found unconstitutional by a Dane County judge. That decision was <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=5311\">overturned<\/a> last year and ultimately appealed to\u00a0the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Members of the court\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wtaq.com\/news\/articles\/2014\/feb\/25\/wisconsin-supreme-court-hears-voter-id-law-arguments\/\">heard arguments<\/a>\u00a0on challenges to the law in February. A decision is not expected until later this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Scott Walker made passing voter ID legislation a legislative priority when elected and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wrn.com\/2014\/03\/walker-could-call-special-session-on-voter-id\/\">said<\/a>\u00a0last month he could\u00a0call the legislature into special session if the law was overturned. State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doj.state.wi.us\/media-center\/2014-news-releases\/april-29-2014\">said<\/a> in a statement today he will\u00a0appeal the decision.<\/p>\n<p>PROFS <a href=\"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=1750\">registered<\/a> against AB 7, legislation\u00a0that became the state&#8217;s voter ID law in 2011.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>United States District Judge Lynn Adelman struck down Wisconsin&#8217;s voter ID law (2011 Wisconsin Act 23) today, saying the law places an undue burden on minorities and the poor and violates the Voting Rights Act.
