{"id":7271,"date":"2015-04-02T11:07:12","date_gmt":"2015-04-02T16:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=7271"},"modified":"2015-04-02T11:08:26","modified_gmt":"2015-04-02T16:08:26","slug":"uw-to-host-former-congressmen-obey-and-petri-april-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=7271","title":{"rendered":"UW-Madison to Host Former Congressmen Obey and Petri April 13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Wisconsin-Madison Office of Federal Relations <a href=\"http:\/\/federalrelations.wisc.edu\/wisconsin-civic-participation-lecture-series\/\">will host<\/a> an event\u00a0featuring former Congressmen David Obey and Thomas Petri at 3:30 pm\u00a0Monday, April 13 in Tripp Commons in the <a href=\"http:\/\/map.wisc.edu\/s\/1096uwhy\">Memorial Union<\/a>, 800 Langdon Street.<\/p>\n<p>The forum, one stop in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshfieldnewsherald.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2015\/03\/09\/former-wi-congressmen-launch-bipartisanship-roadshow\/24675995\/\">statewide tour of college campuses<\/a>, will focus on the importance of civic participation and thoughtful bipartisan discussion of key policy issues. Obey suggested the lecture series after\u00a0Petri announced he would not run for re-election in 2014:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">&#8220;I just thought that, given all the negative vibes about what is happening \u2014 especially in Madison \u2014 that it would be good if we could have a bipartisanship roadshow to simply talk, especially to college students, about the importance of politics and how politics have changed since we got involved with it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Together, Obey, the longest-serving Wisconsin member of Congress, and Petri served in Congress for almost 80 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wipps.org\/\">Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UWMarathonCounty\/posts\/10154553747055725\">David R. Obey Civic Resource Center<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsinhumanities.org\/programs\/current-programs\/working-lives\">Wisconsin Humanities Council\/Working Lives Project<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polisci.wisc.edu\/default.aspx\">UW-Madison Department of Political Science<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lafollette.wisc.edu\/\">Robert M.
