This is a serious issue and there are many questions\u00a0to consider.<\/p>\n<p>The UW-Madison Police Department\u00a0and the University of Wisconsin-Madison\u00a0support existing state law, which appropriately balances individual rights with community safety. We\u00a0oppose\u00a0any legislation that would allow citizens to legally carry concealed weapons inside university buildings. \u00a0Current policies at UW-Madison allow concealed carry on university lands \u2013 but not in buildings.<\/p>\n<p>To us, as law enforcement professionals\u00a0at UWPD, the evidence does not support the idea<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>that our campus would be safer if concealed firearms are allowed in our buildings.\u00a0In states that allow concealed carry, these mass shooting tragedies have still occurred.\u00a0According to 2014 FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) numbers, you are less likely to become a victim of a violent crime at UW-Madison \u2013 which currently does not allow concealed weapons in buildings \u2013 than you are in the state of Wisconsin as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Allowing\u00a0concealed weapons inside a building like Camp Randall Stadium, filled with 80,000 people,\u00a0creates\u00a0a major security issue.\u00a0The training required to obtain a concealed carry permit is minimal.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0urge our legislators\u00a0not to change\u00a0the existing law. Doing so would put the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and guests at risk.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/news\/archive\/uw-system-president-ray-cross-and-uw-system-chancellors-on-campus-concealed-carry-bill\/\"><strong>UW System Statement<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We take the safety of our campus communities very seriously and know that our legislative partners do as well. We have significant concerns and questions with this proposal and cannot currently support it.
