{"id":8324,"date":"2018-02-08T10:58:54","date_gmt":"2018-02-08T16:58:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=8324"},"modified":"2018-02-08T10:58:54","modified_gmt":"2018-02-08T16:58:54","slug":"legislative-update-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profs.wisc.edu\/?p=8324","title":{"rendered":"Legislative Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Legislature is in the final weeks of the 2018 session and PROFS is closely monitoring several bills that could that could seriously affect UW-Madison:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cMark Cook Bills\u201d to Assist Faculty Entrepreneurship, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2017\/proposals\/ab758\">Assembly Bill 758<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2017\/proposals\/sb671\">Senate Bill 671<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Directed by faculty experts, PROFS worked with a bipartisan group of legislators to introduce legislation related to University of Wisconsin research contracts. The faculty group, led by the late Mark Cook (Animal Science), identified the need to change state statutes that regulate how the university contracts with companies in which faculty or other university employees have a financial interest. Both bills have passed through committee and PROFS expects them to be scheduled for a floor vote sometime this month.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bills Limiting Scientific Research, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2017\/proposals\/ab83\">Assembly Bills 83<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2017\/proposals\/reg\/asm\/bill\/ab549\">549<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2017\/proposals\/sb422\">Senate Bills 422<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2017\/proposals\/sb423\">423<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>PROFS is carefully monitoring two bills that would limit the use of fetal tissue in scientific research and is registered against Senate Bill 423. Our statement is on the PROFS website and Facebook page.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bill Limiting University of Wisconsin OB\/GYN Training, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2017\/proposals\/reg\/asm\/bill\/ab206\">Assembly Bill 206<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>PROFS is also registered against AB 206, a bill that would restrict abortion-related activities of UW System and UW Hospitals and Clinics employees. UW School of Medicine and Public Health Dean Robert Golden testified in July the bill would seriously hamper student training in obstetrics and gynecology and could possibly jeopardize the medical school\u2019s accreditation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Campus Carry\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Supporters of campus carry have said they intend to introduce legislation allowing concealed weapons on campus, but nothing has been introduced to date. PROFS is opposed to campus carry and continues to carefully monitor the issue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Wisconsin Retirement System Seminar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PROFS is cosponsoring a La Follette School of Public Affairs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lafollette.wisc.edu\/calendar\/eventdetail\/1690\/la-follette-seminar-avoiding-a-public-pension-crisis-a-history-of-the-wisconsin-retirement-system\">seminar<\/a> on the history of the Wisconsin Retirement System at <strong>12:30 pm on Wednesday, February 21 <\/strong>in Union South. Wisconsin\u2019s pension system is regarded as one of the best, and Gary Gates, the first secretary of the Department of Employee Trust Funds, will explain how the system was created and why Wisconsin has not experienced shortfalls like many other states.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spring Primary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/elections.wi.gov\/node\/4807\">Wisconsin Spring Primary<\/a> is <strong>Tuesday, February 20<\/strong>. The only statewide race on the ballot is for Wisconsin Supreme Court where three candidates are vying for two spots on the April 3 general election ballot. More information on voting in Wisconsin is <a href=\"https:\/\/myvote.wi.gov\/en-us\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Federal Relations <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PROFS Steering Committee member Judith Burstyn recently met with Congressman Mark Pocan as a member of his Higher Education Advisory Group.
