Universities of Wisconsin logoThe Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents will meet at UW-Madison on Thursday and Friday, February 5 and 6. The meeting will be hosted by UW-Madison and held in Union South. Information on joining the meeting via Zoom is here.

Regent committees will meet Thursday morning:

  • The Business and Finance Committee will hear a presentation from UW-Madison on operational excellence and receive several reports and updates on topics including artificial intelligence, information technology projects, and financials.
  • The Education Committee will consider approval of a new UW-Madison bachelor of science degree in Aerospace Engineering and updates to individual university policies relating to campaigning in residence halls. The committee will also hear a presentation from UW-Madison on teaching and learning and a presentation on artificial intelligence for academic officers.
  • The Audit, Risk, and Compliance Committee will hear reports before moving into closed session to discuss several lawsuits relating to recent federal actions, contract negotiations, and issues related to campus crime detection and prevention.
  • The Capital Planning and Budget Committee will consider granting authority for certain aspects of several building projects, including two at UW-Madison (Frautschi Center and Music Hall) and hear a report from UW-Madison on its facilities program. The committee will move into closed session to consider the naming of a UW-Madison facility.

The full board will meet Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. On Thursday, Regents will hear reports from System President Jay Rothman and Regent President Amy Bogost and a presentation from UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin. President Rothman will also facilitate a discussion on artificial intelligence featuring faculty, staff, and students from UW System institutions.

On Friday, UW-Madison will present and discuss The Wisconsin Exchange Program and Regents will hear UW-Madison’s NCAA Division I Athletics Annual Accountability Report. Before adjourning, the board will move into closed session to consider a naming at UW-Madison, honorary degree nominations at UW-Milwaukee, chancellor compensation adjustments, contract negotiations, campus safety strategies, and pending or possible litigation.

PROFS Statement on the Recommendations of the Legislative Council Study Committee on the Future of UW System

A legislative study committee has been meeting since July to discuss UW System’s enrollment and budget challenges. The committee met for last time last month and voted on 19 proposed recommendations, and the results of their votes were made public on Thursday. Our statement on their action is here:

September Board of Regents Meeting

Universities of Wisconsin logoThe Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents is meeting at UW-Parkside on Thursday and Friday, September 26 and 27. Registration to watch the open portions of the meetings is here. The Regents met informally at a welcome reception on Wednesday evening and will meet again at the inauguration of UW-Parkside Chancellor Lynn Akey on Thursday evening.

The Regents will be in committee meetings Thursday morning:

  • The Audit Committee will hear updates on several reports.
  • The Capital Planning & Budget Committee will consider approval of several agreements, leases, and building projects, including the sale of a UW-Madison parcel of vacant land, a lease agreement at 333 East Campus Mall at UW-Madison, and a building project to expand the Grainger Hall dining area.
  • The Business & Finance Committee will consider changes to Regent policies relating to executive salaries and the hiring of the president, chancellors, vice chancellors, and UW System senior leadership positions, and hear a presentation from UW-Parkside on strategic operations and shared services.
  • The Education Committee will hear a presentation from UW-Parkside on the arts and student success and have a discussion on continuing education and the UW Strategic Plan.

The Regents will meet in full session Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. On Thursday, they will hear a presentation from UW-Parkside Chancellor Lynn Akey and updates from UWs President Jay Rothman and Regent President Amy Bogost. They will also discuss the planning, approval, and review of the academic program array and present 2024 University Staff Excellence Awards.

Regents will meet in two separate closed sessions — one to discuss the dismissal with cause of former UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow and one to discuss potential litigation, the naming of a UW-Oshkosh facility, and chancellor performance evaluations.

Earlier today, PROFS sent a letter to Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman and UW Board of Regents President Amy Blumenfeld Bogost encouraging them to support the $800 million biennial budget proposal that Governor Tony Evers shared with the board earlier this summer.

June Board of Regents Meeting

Universities of Wisconsin logo The Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regent will meet at UW-Milwaukee on Thursday and Friday, June 6 and 7. Zoom links to the open portions of the meeting are available here.

This is the first board meeting for newly-appointed Regents Jack Salzwedel, Tim Nixon, and Desmond Adongo. Salzwedel and Nixon will serve 7-year terms, while Adongo will serve a 2-year term as a non-traditional student.

The Regents will meet in committee Thursday morning:

  • The Audit Committee will hear several reports, including the UW-Milwaukee’s NCAA Division I Athletics 2023-24 report and the FY24 Audit Plan Progress Report. The committee will also consider approval of the FY25 Audit Plan and the FY25 Annual Plan for the Office of Compliance and Risk Management.
  • The Capital Planning & Budget Committee will discuss granting authority for several building projects, the sale of a parcel of land at the Marshfield Agricultural Research Station, and a UW-Madison lease agreement. The committee will consider approval of a report on how UW-Madison will honor veterans and military service as part of the Camp Randall Sports Center Replacement Project.
  • The Business & Finance Committee will hear a report from UW-Milwaukee on financial and administrative planning and consider approval of a contractual agreement at UW-Madison and the 2024-25 UW System annual operating budget. The committee will also hear an update on shared services across the Universities of Wisconsin.
  • The Education Committee will consider approval an institutional policy on campaigning in residence halls, four new degree programs, including two at UW-Madison, and the 2024 tenure and promotion report. The committee will also discuss a dual enrollment report and hear an update from the UW System Division of Academic and Student Affairs.

The full board will meet Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. On Thursday, the board will introduce newly-appointed Regents (see above) and hear reports from outgoing Regent President Karen Walsh and Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman. Rothman is expected to provide an update on free speech and civil dialogue on campus.

The Regents will also meet in closed session on Thursday afternoon. They will discuss a student request to review disciplinary action at UW-Madison, a faculty request to review UW-La Crosse personnel decisions, and chancellor personnel evaluations.

On Friday, the Regents are scheduled to recognize the 2024 Academic Staff Excellence Award winners, elect new Board officers, and approve their 2024-25 meeting schedule.

Last week the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents met and heard about the implementation of paid parental leave for UW-Madison and Universities of Wisconsin institutions. PROFS has been working diligently for several years to bring this much-needed benefit to faculty and staff, including post-doctoral fellows. While we strongly support UW’s paid parental leave plan, we will continue to push for paid family leave for all Wisconsin workers. Our statement:

Last week, UW-Milwaukee Chancellor Mark Mone announced the decision to close UWM’s two-year campus in Waukesha in 2025. PROFS is very concerned about the process undertaken to date and expects UWM and the Universities of Wisconsin to follow Regent policies and the principles of shared governance going forward. Universities of Wisconsin logo The Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents will meet at UW-Madison’s Union South on Thursday and Friday, February 8 and 9. UW-Madison will host the Regents at the Chazen Museum of Art on Wednesday evening and at Olin House on Thursday evening. Open portions of the meeting will be available on Zoom.

Regents will meet in committee Thursday morning:

  • The Audit Committee will hear several updates, including the FY24 Audit Plan Progress Report; UW-Madison’s NCAA Division I 2022-23 Athletics Report; the Risk, Compliance and Audit Program; and the Youth Protection and System Policy.
  • The Capital Planning and Budget Committee will discuss giving authority to several campuses for a variety of items, including the construction of UW-Madison’s Camp Randall Sports Center, the sale of the Chancellor’s residence at UW-Milwaukee, and permission for UW-Eau Claire to lease a building for student housing. The committee will move into closed session to consider personal histories as they relate the naming of a facility at UW-Madison.
  • The Business and Finance Committee will discuss several contractual agreements, including one at UW-Madison with Fanatics, hear two reports on information technology projects, and an update on the Universities of Wisconsin’s engagement with Deloitte as it relates to the 2023-28 Strategic Plan and elimination of structural deficits at several campuses.
  • The Education Committee will consider four new degree programs, including a Bachelor of Science in Design, Innovation, and Society at UW-Madison, and consider approving a policy that would eliminate application fees at all campuses except UW-Madison, UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse. The current policy limits the application fee waiver to a student’s first three applications, with the exception of the campuses listed above. UW-Madison will also host a presentation on undergraduate research.

The full board will meet Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. On Thursday the board will hear updates from UW President Jay Rothman and Regent President Karen Walsh. UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin will address the board on the topic of “Innovation for the Public Good” and Associate Vice President Monica Smith of the UW Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging will provide an update.

On Friday the Regents will consider approval of committee action, participate in a panel discussion,“Strategic Alliances: Maximizing Federal Funding Opportunities Through Public-Private Partnerships,” and present the 2024 Regents Diversity Awards.

On Tuesday, the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Employment Relations met to vote on state employee pay plans. Funding for the pay raises was approved by the Legislature and signed into law by Governor Tony Evers as part of the 2023-25 state budget. The Republican-led committee declined to vote on the UW System pay plan, withholding UW employee pay raises for the foreseeable future. Our statement:
